Overview
This project involved creating an app for formula grading, with a focus on fair evaluations and a supportive community. I adjusted the app's look to align with the existing brand while ensuring a user-centric design. Through iterative testing, I developed high-fidelity designs for both Android and iOS version.
Objective and 4 Ws
For this project, I applied the 4W approach (Who, What, When, Where) to create a mobile app for a formula grading community. The Who involved was a user base needing fair evaluations in a collaborative setting. What I delivered were high-fidelity designs tailored for both Android and iOS, ensuring that the app aligned with the existing brand while remaining user-centric. When iterative testing took place, I refined the design to meet user needs, and the final product was a polished and functional app. Where the app would be used is across both mobile platforms, ensuring a consistent experience for all users.
Approach
I followed a comprehensive and user-centric process to create an intuitive and impactful healthcare solution. This involved conducting extensive research and analysis to understand the challenges doctors and patients faced in the healthcare industry. With insights gained, I crafted user personas, journey maps, and wireframes to design intuitive workflows and seamless user experiences.
1.Empathy
Persona
Introducing the persona of "The Fairness Advocate" for this app. This persona embodies the role of a judge, but with three distinct types: the Judge, Group Judge, and Category Judge. While they may have different capabilities within the app, they all share a common goal - to impartially and fairly grade the drivers of formulas.
a) The Judge
This persona evaluates individual drivers with keen attention to detail and fairness. Their goal is to ensure each driver's performance is accurately recognized and rewarded.
b) The Group Judge
Fostering teamwork and collaboration, this persona assesses drivers within groups or teams, promoting healthy competition while considering collective achievements.
c) The Category Judge
Specialized in specific criteria, this persona evaluates drivers based on expertise in designated domains, recognizing excellence in various areas of driving performance.
Interviews
Interviews with experienced judges provided valuable insights on formula grading. Understanding diverse evaluation criteria, addressing challenges, and fostering constructive feedback led to app enhancements. Recognition incentivized motivated judges, ensuring quality evaluations. Accessible training modules were considered for older judges to maintain their skills. The goal was to improve fairness, enhance the app's user experience, and create a supportive community for all drivers.
Interview characteristics

Participants: 9 judges from diverse backgrounds and experiences in the formula grading community.

Duration: Each interview lasted approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Method: Semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions were conducted, allowing for in-depth exploration of the judges' perspectives and experiences.

Approach: Empathetic and non-judgmental approach, encouraging participants to share their thoughts openly.

Setting: Interviews were conducted in-person or via video conferencing, depending on the judges' location and availability.

Data Collection: Detailed notes and audio recordings.

Anonymity: Participants' identities and responses were treated with strict confidentiality to encourage honest and candid feedback.

Research goals
Understanding Grading Criteria: Explore the various grading criteria used by judges to assess drivers' performances.

Grading Process: Investigate the challenges faced by judges during the grading process, such as handling subjective data and managing outliers.
Feedback and Communication: Examine the feedback and communication practices employed by judges to provide constructive evaluations to drivers and foster continuous improvement.

Desired Tools and Features: Identify the tools, features, or enhancements that judges wish to have within the app to streamline the grading process and improve efficiency.

Fairness: Explore strategies employed by judges to mitigate bias and maintain fairness.

User Experience: Assess the overall user experience of judges within the app, exploring ways to enhance engagement and satisfaction in their role.
Findings
2.Definition
Problem
The app-based formula grading system faces challenges in ensuring fair and impartial evaluations of drivers' performances. Judges must assess drivers based on multiple criteria while maintaining consistency and transparency in their grading process.
Constraints
Goals

1. Improve Fairness: The primary goal is to enhance the app's grading system, ensuring that all drivers receive fair evaluations based on objective criteria.

2. Enhance User Experience: The app aims to provide a seamless and user-friendly experience for both judges and drivers, fostering engagement and satisfaction.

3. Increase Judge Retention: By providing judges with incentives and recognition, the app aims to retain skilled evaluators for consistent and high-quality assessments.

4. Foster a community: The app seeks to cultivate a supportive and collaborative environment among drivers, encouraging healthy competition and growth.

User-flow

I created flows for all personas to ensure a user-centered and inclusive design approach for the app. Each persona, including the Judge, Group Judge, and Category Judge, has unique roles and responsibilities within the formula grading process. By mapping out their specific interactions and user journeys, I could identify and address their distinct needs and pain points.

Understanding the various scenarios and touchpoints for each persona allowed me to design tailored experiences that catered to their requirements. Through the creation of user journey maps and wireframes, I visualized the flow of interactions, ensuring a seamless and intuitive experience for all users.

Venn diagram
I used a Venn diagram in this project because it allowed me to visually illustrate the overlapping criteria used by different types of judges within the app-based formula grading system. The Venn diagram effectively showcased the shared evaluation aspects among the Judge, Group Judge, and Category Judge, while also highlighting their unique and distinct grading criteria.
This visualization helped stakeholders and team members better understand the similarities and differences in the evaluation process, aiding in the design and implementation of a comprehensive and fair grading system that caters to all types of drivers.
3.Ideation
Low fidelity wireframes
I opted for low-fidelity wireframes in the development of the Formula app for several strategic reasons. While the allure of high-fidelity designs can be captivating, my choice to start with low-fidelity wireframes stemmed from a deliberate approach to streamline the creative process and maximize efficiency.
Low-fidelity wireframes enabled me to swiftly map out the basic layout and functionality of the app without getting bogged down in intricate details. This approach facilitated rapid iteration and collaborative discussions, allowing the team to evaluate and refine the fundamental structure of the app before investing substantial time in intricate design elements.
Moodboard
This is a mood board I created for the project. It served as a visual reference to capture the essence of the client's existing logo and website, while also incorporating modern design elements. The mood board acted as a guiding inspiration for the app's look and feel, ensuring that the adjustments I made stayed true to the client's established brand identity.
By curating a collection of contemporary visuals, colors, and styles, the mood board enabled me to explore different design directions and achieve a cohesive and modern aesthetic for the app. Through this process, I successfully crafted a mood baord that laid the foundation for the app's striking and up-to-date appearance.
4.Outcome
Hight-fidelity screens for Android and iOS
Through meticulous attention to detail and iterative user testing, we have created visually appealing and user-friendly interfaces for both Android and iOS versions. The designs have significantly improved the app's overall user experience, ensuring intuitive navigation and streamlined workflows for judges and drivers on both platforms. The incorporation of engaging visuals, responsive design, and user-centricity reflects our commitment to delivering a professional and inclusive platform for all users.
Early feedback from users who tested the designs has been positive, highlighting the success of our approach in meeting user needs and preferences on both Android and iOS devices. The high-fidelity designs set a strong foundation for the app's development, promising a seamless and impactful formula grading experience across different mobile platforms.
5.Outro
As we conclude this project, we are proud of the journey we have undertaken to create a cutting-edge app for formula grading. Our dedication to user-centric design, insightful research, and iterative improvements has resulted in a robust and innovative solution. With a supportive community of judges and drivers, we are confident that our app will foster fair evaluations, inspire growth, and revolutionize the formula grading experience. We look forward to seeing the positive impact our app will make in the driving community, as we continue to evolve and innovate in the ever-changing landscape of formula grading. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of this project.
